As a young person in 2016, music has become a significant part of my daily life. I enjoy listening to a range of different music genres, depending on my mood at the time. For instance, I generally tend to mostly listen punk or classic rock. I am unable to pick one specific band to label as my favourite as I like many; my playlists typically include bands such as Panic! At The Disco, Blink182, Green Day, Nickelback and Pink Floyd. However, I do also appreciate classical music and listen to it rather regularly, especially when studying as I find that the sound of piano notes are relaxing, and therefore prevent stress, allowing me to focus more. I also like the way in which it sounds sophisticated and believe that it is perfect for when you want to unwind in the evenings. Rock music, on the other hand, is typically comprised of a prominent vocal melody, accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. This in turn makes it up beat which makes me feel good. In addition to this, I feel that the lyrics have more meaning to them compared to those that found within the pop genre.
I feel that my choice in music has been greatly influenced by my parents as it has always been a part of my life. I was brought up listening to 70's/80's rock, and artists such as Michael Jackson and Queen, whom I still continue to listen to, to this present today. Also, as a result of my father being an army musician, classical music is also something that I was exposed to when growing up. In conjunction with this, it is typically featured in soundtracks from my favourite films/Television shows, such as Hannibal, which obviously influences the frequency of how often I listen to it.
Despite being in a generation where pop music, commonly produced by British artists, dominates the musical charts, I personally do not enjoy listening to it on a daily basis. Because of an increase in modern technology, pop music has subsequently changed over the years, for the worst. For example, current chart topping hits are draining to listen to as I feel that they are ridiculously repetitive and contain unnecessary, overly explicit content.
As I have mentioned above, there has been an increase in modern technology in recent years, meaning that music apps have become a more popular way of streaming and/or downloading songs, which is why digital copies account for 66% of album sales. As a consumer of music myself, I currently have over 2000 songs stored to my phone. subscriptions to applications such as Spotify to download music, which I can then stream from my phone and iPad, at any available time. I also usually listen to Kerrang radio on my phone or access music videos via YouTube, when I am connected to the internet. I find that this is a cheaper and easier way of accessing music, however I still occasionally purchase physical formats in order to listen to them in situations where the internet connection may be poor, such as in the car.
